Welsh golfer Darcey Harry starts her professional career on the Ladies European Tour this week – with the AIG Women’s Open in Wales as her number one target for the season. The event will be at her home club, Royal Porthcawl, at the end of July, and will be the biggest female sporting event ever held in Wales with the world’s top stars descending on the South Wales coast for the first men’s or women’s Major held in Wales.

Golf in Wales is to receive a £1m financial boost from the Welsh Government, to help ensure a lasting legacy from the largest female sporting event ever to be held in Wales. The investment will support the Women’s Golf Legacy Fund which aims to create long-lasting change by addressing barriers faced by women and girls in golf. The initiative will provide grants to golf clubs for projects across Wales, focusing on developing inclusive, family-friendly, and gender-equal facilities.

Wales Golf squad16-year-old Dion Regan has won the biggest title of his career at the Faldo Junior Tour European Grand Final, following in the footsteps of the likes of Rory McIlroy and Mel Reid. It was also a Wales double with Isobel Kelly winning the Under 21 Girls category, at the 28th Grand Final of the series, started by six-time Major champion Sir Nick Faldo to develop the champions of tomorrow.

The North Wales pairing of Debbie Roberts and Heather Wathan produced a remarkable performance to win the 2024 Coronation Foursomes Grand Final in St Andrews. On a cold but still day at the home of golf, the pair from Barons Hill Golf Club triumphed in the popular championship for women and girls’ golfers across Great Britain and Ireland – by scoring 50 stableford points.

Wales Golf have paid tribute to Brian Huggett as a legend of Welsh sport, who played a big role in bringing the Ryder Cup to Celtic Manor in 2010. Huggett has passed away at the age of 87, with tributes pouring in from the world of golf.

Abergavenny’s Alicia Kelly became the first girl to win the Gareth Bale Championship at Celtic Manor, dominating the field to earn a seven-shot victory. Beating the boys in such a prestigious competition is a boost for girl’s golf with less than a year to go before hosting the biggest female sporting event ever held in Wales when the AIG Women’s Open takes place in Royal Porthcawl next summer.

Golfers from across Wales picked up prizes as Wales Golf Finals Week, held at Holyhead Golf Club in North Wales, proved to be a celebration of the sport. “Finals Week is one of the most rewarding of the year, as players from different clubs and levels all come together for the culmination of a series of events,” explained Wales Golf competitions manager, Daniel Fullager.

Welsh Under 14’s Champion Rebecca Del Sol-Gonzalez was delighted to beat the boys to the title – and inspired by the prospect of the AIG Women’s Open coming to Wales next year. While the best women players on the planet are starring at St Andrew’s in this year’s AIG Women’s Open, Del Sol-Gonzalez was competing in North Wales at Northop and edging out Pennard clubmate Thomas Maclean, as well as Wernddu’s Alicia Kelly, by a single shot.

Newport won the Welsh Women’s Team Championships in Rhuddlan to confirm their status as the dominant women’s club team in Wales in recent years. It was their fifth title in the last decade, the second victory in the last three years, for the club who have reached the final 11 times since 2009, including all of the last four.

Newly crowned Welsh Men’s Seniors Closed champion Neil Roderick added the Welsh Seniors Open at Pennard to his lengthening list of Welsh titles. This was a family affair for Roderick with his 88-year-old father able to make the relatively short journey from Neath to Pennard to follow for a few holes, along with his brother, Ian, caddying.
