Wrexham - get ready for the promotion party?

Come 7:20pm on Saturday, the Stok Cae Ras could well be hosting its greatest party yet.

Should Wycombe fail to beat play-off chasing Leyton Orient in the 12:30pm kick-off, Wrexham will clinch a third successive promotion by beating Charlton in north Wales in the 5:30pm fixture.

Having cheered each and every one of the Addicks' four goals against the Chairboys at Adams Park on Monday afternoon as their side were beating Blackpool 2-1 at Bloomfield Road, the Wrexham faithful are now bidding to roar their side on to a pivotal triumph over Nathan Jones' men.

Phil Parkinson's side are no strangers to the limelight, and they will once again find themselves in front of the eyes of the world after being selected for television coverage by Sky Sports.

Co-owner Rob McElhenney was also in attendance for his club's Easter double header with Bristol Rovers and Blackpool, with the majority of cameras at Bloomfield Road fixed on the American in the away end rather than the action on the pitch.

With his team - who are four points behind Wrexham - still in the mix for automatic promotion, Charlton boss Jones upped the ante with a far from subtle dig at the Welsh side.

Speaking after his side's bumper win against Wycombe, Welshman Jones called Wrexham a "circus" during a post-match interview on the English Football League Highlights show.

"We'll finish, we'll debrief, we'll breathe a little bit and then we'll move forward with Wrexham," he said.

"It's a bumper game, we have to go to the circus and see what we can get."

A circus the Stok Cae Ras most certainly is not, even if some of the media coverage has sometimes jumped at the whip cracked by ringmasters McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

But amidst his jibe at his next opponents, Jones is only too aware of the scale of the task that lies in wait for his troops at the weekend.

His men are already in must-win territory while Wrexham have their destiny firmly in their own hands having gone unbeaten in eight matches prior to the crunch test with the south-east London side.

Stockport can't yet be discounted from the race to join Birmingham in going up into the Championship automatically, although the footballing gods would need to align, and then some, for Dave Challinor's men to finish second.

Regardless of the outcome of all third tier matches on Saturday, Wrexham are guaranteed to go into the final day of the regular season mathematically in the mix to earn a top two spot should they be unable to get over the line in their penultimate fixture.

But having been far closer to their best to beat Blackpool, with James McClean and Ollie Rathbone netting the goals for the visitors in Lancashire, Parkinson has called upon Wrexham's supporters to play their part as his side look to get the job done with a game to spare.

"I've got to be honest with you, I want that place bouncing - these lads deserve it," said Parkinson.

"We've come a long, long way this season. We've shaken off a lot of big clubs in this division. 

"We need everybody in the ground to create an atmosphere and get the Racecourse bouncing to help the team as much as we can."

Should the unthinkable happen and Wrexham miss out on runner-up spot, or even fail to gain promotion via the play-offs, the 2024-25 campaign will still have been an astonishing one for Wrexham, who it's easy to forget were playing non-league football just two years ago.

But the experienced head that is Phil Parkinson remains primed to ensure his Wrexham side have the last laugh, and that his opposite number Nathan Jones is left to feel red-faced after the heat of battle in the north of his homeland.
