Alan Sheehan has been given his first contract as a head coach after Swansea City's confirmation his Championship rescue mission has been rewarded with a three-year deal.

Swansea City have confirmed Alan Sheehan as their permanent head coach on a three-year contract.

His appointment follows a remarkable turnaround during his tenure as caretaker.

The 38-year-old Irishman has impressed both on the pitch and behind the scenes, steering the club from relegation fears to a guaranteed top-half finish in the Championship.

The Swans’ director of football Football Richard Montague said: "We've been very impressed with Alan since he's taken over as caretaker head coach for a second time.

“It was important that we carried out a thorough and detailed process for appointing our new head coach.

“We had to get this decision right, and we are very happy with the work that’s been done and confident that we've picked the best head coach to take our club to the next level."

Initially brought in as assistant head coach in the summer of 2023, Sheehan first took interim charge in December of that year, collecting 11 points from seven games.

He then returned to his supporting role before being reappointed in February of this  year after the departure of Luke Williams, who had overseen a poor run of form with seven defeats in nine.

At the time of his second appointment, Swansea were languishing in 17th place and only eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Since then, Sheehan has revitalised the squad, guiding them to 23 points from a possible 36.

The Swans now sit 11th in the table and will conclude their campaign at home to Oxfor United on Saturday.

Club chief executive Tom Gorringe has also praised Sheehan’s leadership and tactical qualities.

"Alan has shown strong leadership and tactical acumen during his time as caretaker head coach,” said Gorringe.

“Collectively, we believe he is the right person to take Swansea City forward and build on the progress that we've made towards the end of this season. We’re excited and optimistic about what we can achieve together."

Sheehan’s backroom staff are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.

The former Notts County and full-back’s  pedigree includes coaching experience at Luton Town and Southampton.
