Swansea City have sacked Luke Williams after seven losses in nine games, leaving them with a looming relegation fight. With the club in crisis, who will take charge next?

Swansea City have sacked head coach Luke Williams following a dismal run of seven defeats in their last nine Championship fixtures.

The decision has also led to the postponement of a scheduled fans’ forum.

Williams departs after a challenging 13-month tenure, leaving Swansea in 17th place in the second tier, eight points above the relegation zone with 13 games remaining.

His departure follows a turbulent January transfer window, during which the club failed to secure key targets and sanctioned the sale of captain Matt Grimes to promotion-chasing Coventry City.

Among the fanbase, frustration over the club’s direction continues to mount.

The Swans were firmly in the play-off hunt towards the end of last year, sitting just four points off the top six.

However, their dramatic downturn in form, culminating in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to struggling Stoke City, ultimately sealed Williams’ fate.

Over their last nine league matches, the Swans collected just four points from a possible 27, also suffering an FA Cup exit to Southampton.

Williams’ dismissal comes shortly after the appointment of Richard Montague as Swansea’s director of football.

The two had previously worked together during Notts County’s promotion-winning campaign in 2022-23, though Williams had stated that he played no part in Montague’s arrival, adding that he expected his influence to be beneficial.

With Williams departing, his assistant Ryan Harley and analyst George Lawtey have also left the club.

First-team coach Alan Sheehan, who briefly led the side on an interim basis following Michael Duff’s departure in December 2023, has again been handed temporary control.

During his previous stint, Sheehan managed three victories from seven matches.

He will now oversee the team alongside coach Kristian O’Leary and goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson as Swansea prepare to host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Swansea’s chairman, Andy Coleman, and Montague will spearhead the search for a permanent replacement, with the club confirming the process is already in motion.

Meanwhile, the postponed fans’ forum has been rescheduled for 3 March.

“This was a difficult decision and one that has not been taken lightly,” Swansea chairman Coleman said in a club statement.

“Luke has led the club through some challenging periods and we appreciate his hard work.

“I am aware of the effort he and his staff have put in throughout the last 13 months for Swansea City.

“I want to personally thank Luke, Ryan and George for their dedication and the sacrifices they have made on behalf of the club.

“Unfortunately, since the turn of the year our performances and results have not been of the standard required at this level.

“Ultimately, that has led us to conclude a change is required in order to bring about an improvement in our showings on the pitch.”
